Tony Lees was born in 1940 in Bolton. Due to Tony suffering with asthma as a small child at school, Tony tried art lessons instead of sport. When leaving school he decided to try to paint once again and felt he was rather good at it and loved watercolours! Despite no formal training he developed impressions created by the industrial nature of the area of Lancashire in which he lived.
In recent years the contrasting countryside of the Lake District and other rural areas added further impressions. Fell walking was a great inspiration to Tony and during long walks such as the Pennine Way, Coast to Coast, West Highland Way and others, the different effects of the sun, shadows and varying weather conditions on the landscape have all contributed to his highly popular personal interpretations displayed in his work.
The occasional opportunities to add an element of abstraction in his painting, coupled with the use of varying colouring and application techniques has resulted in an artist with a highly individual style which is being appreciated more and more by people who like paintings ‘with a feel’.
Tony’s paintings are now in homes as far apart as France, U.S.A., Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Spain, South Africa and Japan, in addition to the U.K. A varied selection of prints from carefully selected locations is available. These show how Tony’s techniques are illustrated to the full.
Tony sadly passed away in 2016. His family are continuing to supply prints through various Lakeland Galleries.
Prior to Tony’s passing, Tony had talked about turning some of his personal favourites into jigsaws, which the family have now achieved, shown within this website.
